Australia: Death cause undetermined: Miranda Hebble left children in shower for 10 hours

Boy, 2, and ten-month-old brother died after exhausted Australian mother 'left them in the shower and fell asleep for ten hours'

  • Miranda Hebble had been left exhausted by her youngest child's sleeplessness, inquest hears
  • She had no history of mental health problems or drug and alcohol abuse prior to the boys' deaths

A baby and a toddler were found dead after their mother put them both in the shower and fell asleep, an inquest heard today.
Miranda Hebble, who was 22 at the time of the tragedy, left her sons Lochlan and Malachi Stevens in the steam-filled bathroom at their house in Perth, Australia, for ten hours after she passed out.
When she woke up she discovered ten-month-old Malachi floating in the shower on his side with bruises on his cheek while Lochlan, two, was lying on the floor with blood coming from his mouth.
He also had a scratch on his forehead and a mark on his stomach, the court was told.

Ms Hebble had been caring for the boys at home alone while their father, Christopher Stevens, was working on a fly-in fly-out basis, the Australian Associated Press reported.
Lochlan had smeared faeces from his nappy on floors, walls and the baby's cot, spurring her to put the boys in the shower to clean them up.
She left to fetch something, closing the bathroom door behind her, but fell asleep before she could return, the inquest was told.
When she returned to the bathroom, some ten hours later, both children were dead.
Ms Hebble told an emergency services operator: 'I passed out and the plug in the shower got plugged up ... and the shower filled up ... and they're not breathing. They're dead.'
Doctors pronounced both boys dead at 2am the following morning.

Kate Ellson, counsel assisting the West Australia coroner, told the court that 'quiet' Ms Hebble had no history of mental illness or drug and alcohol abuse.
But she added that the young mother had struggled with sleep because of Malachi's restlessness.
The court also heard of a previous incident when Ms Hebble had left Malachi in a car while visiting a shop and the baby had to be pulled hot, crying and red in the face from the vehicle by police.
Ms Hebble told officers she had left him there because she was so exhausted she feared she might drop him if she tried to carry him, Miss Ellson said.
Post-mortem examinations could not reach a definitive conclusion as to how Ms Hebble's sons died in November 2008.
Drowning may have caused Malachi's death while Lochlan may have suffered exhaustion, hunger and possible hypothermia with exposure, said forensic pathologist Dr Jodi White.
Ms Hebble was comforted by family members as she watched proceedings. She and boys' father have now separated.
The inquest continues.

GOSFORD, Australia — An Australian woman convicted of manslaughter in the deaths of her two children in Alberta is reported to have denied she was a bad mother and is not ruling out having more kids.
Allyson McConnell is quoted by the Australian newspaper the Sunday Telegraph in a story posted on its website Saturday that she “wouldn’t say no” to more children.
McConnell was given a six-year prison sentence after her sons Connor, 2, and 10-month-old Jayden were drowned in a bathtub in 2010 in the family home in Millet, south of Edmonton.
She served 15 months in a psychiatric hospital after taking into account time served before her trial and was deported to Australia shortly after she was released April 4.
McConnell told the newspaper she is trying to get over what has happened to her.
She said she is also a victim.
“There have been a lot of things written about me being a bad mother,” McConnell, 34, told the Sunday Telegraph.
“I wasn’t a bad mother, I was actually a very loving mother. But you never hear about that.”
The Crown has said it intends to appeal both McConnell’s conviction and sentence.
Alberta Justice Minister Jonathan Denis said earlier this month that the province intended to contact Australian officials to notify them that McConnell is a person of interest.
He says if the Crown is successful in persuading the courts to increase McConnell’s sentence, the province would try to extradite her from Australia to serve more time.

  • Three-day-old infant placed on board with her mouth taped and thrown into the flames
  • The mother, 26, had allegedly approved of the sacrifice of her child
  • Police have arrested four members sect which comprised of 12 'professional' people
A three-day-old baby was thrown on a bonfire and burned to death in an horrific ritual because a cult leader had decided she was the antichrist and that the end of the world was near.
Police in Chile have arrested four people accused of taking part in the ritual in which the baby was placed on a board with her mouth taped before being thrown into the flames.
The baby was taken to a hill in the town of Colliguay near the Chilean port of Valparaiso on Nov. 21 where the ritual took place.

The baby's mother, 25-year-old Natalia Guerra, had allegedly approved the sacrifice.
Miguel Ampuero, of the Police investigative Unit, Chile's equivalent of the FBI, said: 'The baby was naked.

'They strapped tape around her mouth to keep her from screaming. Then they placed her on a board.
'After calling on the spirits they threw her on the bonfire alive.'

'Everyone in this sect was a professional,' Ampuero said. 'We have someone who was a veterinarian and who worked as a flight attendant, we have a filmmaker, a draftsman. Everyone has a university degree.'
Police said Castillo Gaete, the ringleader, was last seen traveling to Peru to buy ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic brew plant that he used to control the members of the rite.

A laboratory technician may have used her professional skills to gas herself and her young children to death in London.
On Friday 12 April, police were called to a house in Ruislip, west London, where they found the dead bodies of mum Heena Solanki, 34,  and her two children, Jasmine, nine, and Prisha, four.
The bodies were apparently discovered by Solanki's husband, Kalpesh. Shocked neighbours reported a "chemical smell" emanating from the family's semi-detached home.
Solanki worked as a school lab technican, according to reports.
Police investigating the triple death carried bags marked "caution health hazard" out of the home.
Neighbours were told to close her windows.
Don Perry, 76, told the Sunday Mirror: "Police told us to shut the windows as there might have been a toxic substance. We didn't know what to think. We had no idea what was going on and no one would tell us."

It is understood Solanki lived at the property with her husband Kalpesh, 42, her children, and her parents in law. She was reportedly set to start a new job next month.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "'We were called to reports of an incident.
"We sent three ambulance crews, two officers and our hazardous area response team.
"Sadly three patients, a woman and two children, died at the scene."
A neighbour paid tribute to the family. She said: "They were a lovely family and the children were brought up very well.
"They always made an effort to greet you. It's all very sad."
A post-mortem will take place next week. The deaths of Heena, Jasmine and Prisha are being treated as "unexplained" by police.

FILICIDE: NYC: off-duty NYPD PO Rosette Samuel, 43, killed her boyfriend, her 1-year-old son and herself with her NYPD service weapon.

The mothers of East Flatbush can’t believe that a  woman killed her own baby

News of murder-suicide in their neighborhood stuns Rosette Samuel's neighbors

A body is removed from the scene of the devastation.

The mothers couldn't believe a mother did this.
"Oh dear mother of God," said Marie Jean, as she hurried toward her home four houses away from 805 E. 56th St., where police say on Monday morning an off-duty NYPD PO Rosette Samuel, 43, killed her boyfriend, her 1-year-old son and herself with her NYPD service weapon.
""When I left this morning I saw ambulances," Marie says. "I thought some sick lady was being taken to the hospital. No one told me a mother killed her boyfriend and her own baby. Dear mother of God, as a mother, it gives me a pain right here."
She clutched her belly in a way only a mother will ever understand.
Then she showed ID to a uniformed cop stationed at the top of E. 56th St., before ducking under the yellow crime tape and walking down toward the thicket of police white shirts, detectives and forensics crews.
Almost every mother I spoke with on Monday inside and outside A&A Laudromat on this usually quiet corner of East Flatbush had the same reflex womb-cradling reaction to the horrific news .
"There's no love left in the world when a mother can put a barrel of a gun to her own baby and pull the trigger," said Sheryl Potter, clutching her belly with two hands.
"A fight with your man, I understand,” said Potter. Even killing him as crazy as that is — dump him, divorce him — at least you can make some kinda sense from it. But a mother killing her own baby? It's goes against human nature. "

LOUIS LANZANO/AP

Police investigators gather in front of a Brooklyn home where police say, a NYPD office killed her boyfriend, turned the gun on her 1-year-old son and then shot herself.

Monica Davis, 28, said she was awakened by police helicopters chugging above her street.
"This is a quiet neighborhood. Kids can play in the street. A woman can walk alone at night. Now I learn what? That a mom killed her own baby right here? Oh my God, that is just not normal human behavior. A mother brings a baby into the world and spends her life protecting her children from harm. You are supposed to die for your baby. So how do you kill your own baby? How?"
Four months after Newtown where 20 children were slaughtered like lambs in their classrooms, we have mothers of those kids pleading with Congress for gun control so that no more babies will be killed.
And then on Monday morning on this quiet Brooklyn street of private homes, where the first verdant buds popped in the awakening trees, where squirrels played tag on overhead wires, where sparrows chirped in trimmed rose bushes, where wash hangs on backyard lines in the 60- degree breezes of April, a new mother with a handgun kills her man, her baby and herself in a macabre death dance to spring. Monica Davis flattened her open palm against her belly and asked, "How? Why?"
Cynthia, a thin mom with a 2-year old boy in a stroller, shivered on the same corner.
"This scene right here has me shaking," Cynthia says. "I just had a domestic violence situation myself two weeks ago. My son's father and I were always arguing. He slammed my head against the wall and there was a nail protruding and I wound up with two staples in my head. He was arrested. He begged me to drop charges. I did, but I made him move out. Because now I know how fast that can go from words to violence. Maybe to murder time."
She pulled her stroller closer. "After my baby's father hit me in front of my son, my little boy was screaming, upset," she says, touching her womb. "And all I wanted to do was get his father out the door before he hurt my son, too. Protecting my boy, that's all I worried about as a mother. So I just can't understand this mom killing her baby. It goes against everything that you are."
She pulled the stroller closer, and then like all the other mothers I spoke to on the corner, put her hand over her womb.

When mothers kill their own

When mothers kill their own

By: Radhika Ravi Rajan on Apr 16, 2013 |
Some time ago, I queried in a blog if it was possible for a mother to kill her own child? Today, news is out that Aarushi Talwar (in the famous Aarushi muder case) was, indeed, killed by her own parents.

Teenager Aarushi Talwar's sensational murder five years back was carried out by her own dentist parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar (right photo) and no outsider was present at the time of the crime, CBI told a court here today.

One of the core issues in the investigations into the Aarushi case was whether, being a mother, Nupur Talwar could have killed her own daughter in cold blood. Nupur herself expressed through her counsel that no mother could ever kill her own child.

Only yesterday, news broke that a UK NRI mother, a school laboratory assistant by profession, killed herself and her two daughters by filling their home with poisonous fumes. Heena Solanki, 34, was found dead with Jasmine, aged nine, and Prisha, aged four, after neighbours noticed a strong smell emanating from the house.

So it turns out that parents can indeed kill their own children in some circumstances. A mother, or father, is also a human being with emotions, many times irrational, and can therefore, commit the ultimate crime of killing their own offspring.

There are mothers who cannot afford to feed their baby, there are others who are ashamed to own up to a child born out of wedlock. Sometimes, sheer frustration over being unable to control a child, makes a mother turn violent. In general, people have become less tolerant and more angry, and this group can easily include mothers as well as fathers. In the US, many mothers have been reported to turn killers due to post-partum depression.

In Hindu mythology, Putana, as mother-figure, fed poisonous milk to Krishna in a bid to kill him.

This is not a debate to justify a mother's right to kill, but a practical look at a social woe that a mother or father, for a number of reasons, can choose to end their own child's life. Very difficult times, indeed, for children, who belong to the age of innocence...

FILICIDE: Scotland and Tenerife: Corinna Reid guilty of manslaughter

British couple convicted of killing 16-month-old son by giving him methadone and anti-depressant drug on Tenerife holiday

  • Corrina Reid and Robert Cormack were found guilty of manslaughter
  • Their 16-month-old son Aiden died in January 2007 on the island
  • He was originally thought to have died of natural causes
  • But tests showed traces of methadone and anti-depressants in his body
A Scottish couple were convicted last night of killing their 16-month-old son by giving him methadone and an anti-depressant.
Corinna Reid, 37, was cleared of homicide but found guilty of the manslaughter of her toddler Aiden.
Her former partner, and the child’s father, Robert Cormack, was also cleared of homicide but convicted of manslaughter.

The couple, recovering drug addicts, had faced up to 14 years in jail if found guilty of the youngster’s homicide in a hotel room in Tenerife during a holiday.
They can expect to be jailed for between one and four years.
State prosecutor Jaime Serrano asked judge Jose Felix Mota to jail the couple, from Edinburgh, for two and a half years.
Their defence lawyers asked him to consider a maximum sentence of six months, taking into account mitigating circumstances including the couple’s drug dependency when Aiden died.

They were bailed until sentencing, expected to be announced in a month’s time. Both declined to comment.
Robert’s lawyer Mari Angeles Conde said: ‘It’s very unlikely either of them will be ordered to return to jail to serve any more prison time given the time they have already been held in custody.’
The jury reached its majority 8-1 verdict only hours after the pair had appeared at the Provincial Law Court in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.
They determined that Reid and Cormack had consciously given the infant methadone and the anti-depressant Diazepam.

Tragic: 16-month-old Aiden's death in the popular resort of Adeje on the Canary Island was originally blamed on bronchitis
But the nine-member jury unanimously ruled that they could not have been aware of the lethal consequences of the mix of Aiden’s bronchitis and the drugs he had consumed.
The toddler died in January 2007 at the family’s holiday hotel in Adeje, southern Tenerife.
His death was blamed on bronchitis but tests revealed traces of the heroin substitute methadone and tranquiliser Diazepam in his body.
Reid, a mother-of-three, and her then boyfriend, Cormack, 42, were arrested and extradited to Tenerife two years later.
'Corinna and I have lost everything. To suggest we intentionally harmed our child is ridiculous'
Robert Cormack in court

It was only then Cormack confessed the youngster might have drunk some of his orange juice laced with methadone.
Spanish authorities dismissed their claims it was an accident and insisted the couple drugged him on purpose.
Earlier Reid had told the court: ‘I didn’t give anything to Aiden. When Robert told me it was an accident, I know he’s telling me the truth. He would never have knowingly killed Aiden.’
She added: ‘I thought Aiden had died of complications from flu and a virus that had affected his breathing.’
Cormack, who was involved in an altercation with a photographer outside the court, insisted: ‘The police suggested we wanted to subdue Aiden with the drugs so we could drink alcohol.
‘Every minute we spent with Aiden was a joy.
‘Corinna and I have lost everything. To suggest we intentionally harmed our child is ridiculous.’
Mr Serrano told jurors Aiden died after the pair ‘consciously’ gave their son the drugs to sedate him so they could get a proper night’s sleep.
Reid’s defence lawyer, Christian Mesia, described the mother as a ‘victim’.
He added: ‘To this day we still don’t have a cause of death for Aiden and that’s because of the botched investigation.’
Cormack’s defence lawyer, Mari Angeles Conde, told the jury: ‘He didn’t want to kill his son.
‘Was he negligent? Possibly, yes, but that doesn’t mean he meant to kill his son.’

FILICIDE: Scotland: Kimberley Hainey Murder conviction quashed

Mother who hid son's death from family and social services to be freed from prison as her murder conviction is quashed

  • Kimberley Hainey, 38, was jailed for life after trial in December 2011
  • But today she can walk free after a court quashed her conviction
  • Body of Ms Hainey's son Declan was discovered in March 2010
  • It was eight months after the toddler had last been seen alive
A mother jailed for life over the death of her toddler son sobbed as appeal judges finally ordered her freedom today.
Kimberley Hainey, 38, had been told yesterday that the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh was ready to overturn her conviction for murder.
But that left judges with a problem - because Hainey had also been given a seven year prison sentence for trying to cover up the murder, a charge which included the words 'being conscious of your guilt.'

Authorities said the Declan's body was mummified when it was discovered in March 2010 when he would have been 23 months old
The legal conundrum was solved today when defence QC Edward Targowski asked permission to lodge a late appeal against the charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Advocate depute Andrew Miller replied: 'The Crown does not oppose receipt of an additional ground of appeal in relation to charge two and does not seek to resist the ground of appeal.'
Judge Lord Clarke said this was 'a proper exercise of your discretion.'

He then told Hainey that in the circumstances the cover-up charge was also quashed, as well as the murder charge.
A trial at the High Court in Glasgow at the end of 2011 heard how the mummified body of little Declan Hainey was found in a squalid flat in Bruce Road Paisley.
The tragic tot should have been celebrating his fifth birthday yesterday (Wed) as his mum returned to court.

By the time doctors were able to examine the tot, it was impossible to tell how he died.
Hainey was found guilty, by majority, of wilfully ill-treating and neglecting him, failing to provide him with food and drink and failing to seek medical attention.
The charge alleged that Hainey had 'by other means to the prosecutor unknown, caused unnecessary suffering and injury to the health of said Declan Hainey, whereby he died and you did murder him.'
'The court has come to the conclusion that the conviction of the Appellant (Hainey) of the murder of her baby son, Declan... must be quashed.'
Lord Clarke
Hainey came to the Court of Criminal Appeal in January seeking to overturn the conviction which earned her a minimum sentence of 15 years.
Defence QC Edward Targowski QC argued that crucial evidence heard by the jury was flawed.
The lawyer questioned the claims expert witnesses called by the Crown who said that tell-tale marks on his bones were signs of malnutrition.
The murder charge alleged that heroin addict Hainey had abandoning her son for long periods of time without food or drink while she partied, drank and took drugs.
The jury heard how Hainey partied and took drugs while her son lay dead in his cot. She even sold his clothes and toys to buy heroin.
They rejected Hainey's claim that she had woken one morning to find Declan dead in his cot and had not reported the tragedy because, as Mr Targowski explained: 'She simply went into a downward spiral.'
By the time tragic Declan Hainey's decomposing body was found in March 2010 - just before his second birthday - he had not been seen alive for eight months.
A six week trial also heard how Hainey had kept family, neighbours and social services at arm's length - not allowing them to get close to the little boy.
The jury were shown photos of rubbish, dirty clothes and nappies littering the squalid flat.
Today, Hainey remained motionless as Lord Clarke, sitting with Lords Mackay of Drumadoon and Drummond Young quashed her convictions.
As she was led back to the cells under the court room she began to sob. Hainey is expected to be released later today.

FILICIDE (multiple): UK: more on Fiona Anderson

New CCTV shows heavily pregnant mother-of-three who killed herself and children as her family hits out at social services over her death

  • Family says: 'We wish more had been done to recognise her mental health problems'
  • CCTV footage shows her outside offices of a housing trust
  • Bodies of mother's three children discovered after she jumped to her death
  • Suffolk Police say they are treating deaths as suspicious
With her baby bump clearly visible, this is desperate Fiona Anderson as she drops off the keys to the flat where her three young children lay dead.
The chilling CCTV images show the 23-year-old who was seven months pregnant as she arrived at the house where her ex-boyfriend was staying, less than two hours before she fell to her death.
Miss Anderson, who it is thought had one of the children's teddy bears in her pocket, was unable to speak to Craig McLelland, 24, who she believed had left her for another woman.

Unbeknown to anyone, the couple's children Levina, three, Addy, two, and 11-month-old Kyden were already lying dead in the rented flat a quarter of a mile away.

The footage taken at 6:20am then shows Miss Anderson looking resigned as she walks away from the house.
At 8am she was found dead after she fell 40ft to her death from a car park roof in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on Monday.
Police then went to her flat half a mile away at 11:20am and discovered the bodies of her children.
It is thought that she may have wanted Mr McLelland, who she stabbed during a row the night before, to have found the bodies.

Yesterday, Miss Anderson's family said they wished more had been done to recognise their daughter's mental health problems as friends claimed social services had turned their back on her.
Her parents paid tribute to their 'loving and caring' daughter who they said had suffered from mental illness since she was young.
Michael and Kerry Anderson and her sisters Claire and Laura Anderson said that 'life was sometimes overwhelming' for her.
In a statement, they said: 'Fiona was a beautiful, intelligent girl and a loving and caring person, but she had suffered from mental illness since she was young and we believe she was driven to her actions yesterday.
'This was not our Fiona - she was not herself. She cared passionately about others but often brought stress on herself by caring too much. She was gentle but ended up under too much pressure.

They added: 'She was really popular but just didn't believe she was and had forgotten there were people there that could help her.
'We wish more had been done to recognise her mental health problems.'
Friends have claimed that when she died, Miss Anderson was in despair after social services failed to help her.
Showna Elliott, 27, said: 'I know she went to social services to ask for help, but they started investigating her and threatening to take her children away.
'It looks like she was chronically depressed. She needed help, but she didn't get it.
Neighbour Karleigh Burlingham, 20, added: 'When she went to them for help they turned their back.'
Suffolk social services said that they are currently investigating the case but did not deny that social workers had talked with Miss Anderson about taking her children into care.

The incident has been passed to the county's independent local Safeguarding Children's Board, 'as is normal with this type of incident'.
Sue Cook, director for children and young people at Suffolk County Council, said: 'This is a terrible and very sad incident.
'My thoughts at this time are with the family and all those who knew the mother and children.
'With the police investigation ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment on specifics relating to the family.'
The Independent Police Complaints Commission are also investigative after it was revealed officers went to Miss Anderson's home hours before she fell to her death but she turned them away.
They went to her flat in the early hours of Monday morning as they investigated the stabbing of Mr McLelland.
It is thought that Miss Anderson stabbed him in a rage at her flat on Monday night, but at the time he had told police that he had been stabbed by a man in a nearby street.
