FILICIDE (multiple): England: Fiona Adams

Feb 18 2011

A jury has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of a mother accused of killing two of her children in a house fire in Derbyshire.

Fiona Adams, 24, is alleged to have murdered her five-year-old daughter Niamh and son Cayden, two, in the blaze in Buxton last April.
Miss Adams escaped from the house in Edale Way, with youngest child Kiernan, by jumping from an upstairs window just before midnight on April 23.
Adams denies killing Niamh and Cayden, as well two other charges of grievous bodily harm and arson with intent.
At a previous hearing at Nottingham Crown Court Adams, who has visible burn scars on her neck and chest, told jurors she would never have tried to hurt her children and did not leave Niamh and Cayden to die in the house that night.
When asked by defence counsel Shaun Smith QC if she would have wanted to kill or hurt her children or kill herself, she broke down as she replied: "No, I have never wanted to hurt them."
She said she took took Niamh and Cayden, who shared a bedroom, into her bedroom when the fire took hold. Adams said she opened the window to "chuck the children out of it".
She said she remembered letting Kiernan go, then turning round and not being able to see her other children.
The prosecution claims she started the blaze deliberately to create "drama" to get attention from partner James Maynard, who had cheated on her in the past.
She admitted her relationship with Mr Maynard had its ups and downs, including his infidelity, and the court heard she took two overdoses in the space of one week in June 2008.

FILICIDE: England: Dawn Makin

A NURSE who doted on her daughter aged four was critically ill in hospital last night after apparently stabbing the child to death - then attempting suicide.

The horrified mother of Dawn Makin, 33, found her lying in bed unconscious beside the body of Chloe, who had been stabbed and slashed.

Last night, as police admitted they were "puzzled" over the killing but were not seeking anyone else, it was reported Dawn was the subject of an investigation following accusations she had leaked patient details in her old job.
The Information Commissioner's probe was on-going into the allegations which centred on the Moorgate Primary Care Centrea where she had worked before being sacked last August.
Meanwhile a post-mortem has now revealed Chloe suffered multiple stab wounds.
Dawn was known as a loving mum who called red-haired Chloe "Princess". Chloe's gran Sheila and a pal forced the door of the semi-detached house after being unable to contact Dawn for hours.

The nurse, who had slashed her wrists and swallowed poison, was rushed to the hospital where she used to work in A&E.
Last night, as detectives launched a murder probe, she was on a life support machine, with Sheila, 59, dad Derek, 58, and brother Wayne, 32, by her bedside at Fairfield Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester.

A senior cop said: "We were called out by her concerned family as she wouldn't answer the door - and found this awful scene.
"From inquiries so far Dawn was a great mum, with no history of any problems. Something obviously happened but we don't yet know what."
Yesterday Chloe's dad Michael Burke, who split with Dawn three years ago, laid flowers at the house where his daughter died. In a window was a card that read: "I love you from Chloe."

Michael, 38, said: "This is a nightmare. Chloe was a lovely, bubbly girl with curly, ginger hair who loved Peppa Pig and running about.
"What more do you want of a four-year-old girl? I just can't understand what's gone on but I want to know."
His son Nathan, 17, added: "I'm devastated Chloe's gone. She was a great little stepsister. You couldn't say a bad word about her. Why would anyone do such a thing?"

Michael's mum Pauline Burke, 56, visited the house yesterday and said: "Nobody knows what caused this. We just can't work it out.
"Chloe was a gorgeous child, with lovely red hair, and her mum adored her. They were both so happy and there's no way Dawn would ever hurt her little girl.
"Michael is devastated. I've spent the day cradling him in my arms like a baby." Dawn's boyfriend, accident insurance worker Martin Campbell, 31, was too upset to talk.

Friend Danny Mullin, 33, said: "Dawn had been seeing Martin for a couple of years. She liked a night out but was always there for Chloe. She'd toned it down since she became a mum and mostly just went out with Martin." Her Facebook page lists her favourite books and movies as murder and horror. She gives her interests as "shopping, spending time with my daughter and getting wrecked".
Chief Superintendent Jon Rush said police had no previous dealings with the family.
He added: "The grandmother was really concerned at being unable to get in touch with her daughter.
"She went to the house with a neighbour, who helped break the door, and found her daughter in bed together with her granddaughter. "We are treating this as a murder inquiry. We are not looking for anyone else."
The Information Commissioner's Office confirmed the probe into a breach of patient confidentiality.
A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating a breach of confidentiality regarding patient information at NHS Bury, which involves a former employee who was based at Moorgate Primary Care Centre.
"These are very sad circumstances. As the police are conducting an investigation, it would be inappropriate to provide any further information."

FILICIDE (multiple): England: Fiona Adams MOTHER ‘KILLED CHILDREN IN FIRE TO CREATE DRAMA’ AFTER HER LOVER CHEATED

Story Image

Tuesday February 1,2011

By Paul Jeeves

A JEALOUS mother killed two of her children when she torched the home she shared with her cheating partner, a court heard.
Fiona Adams sparked the blaze to “create a drama” after having been left to look after their three young children while her lover was unfaithful, it is alleged.
But tragically the fire started in a laundry basket by the “depressed” 23-year-old took a “rapid and devastating” hold, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

It swept through the family’s semi-detached home shortly before midnight, killing her daughter Niamh, five, and two-year-old son Cayden.
Adams and her eight-month-old son Kiernan escaped when she threw him onto a trampoline in the garden in Buxton, Derbys, and leapt to safety herself.
After the blaze a message posted on Adams’ Facebook page warned local thugs to stay away from her and the house. She claims she had been targeted by them in the weeks beforehand.
The court was yesterday shown footage from a neighbour’s CCTV on which a female repeatedly shouted “hello” against a background of crashing and banging.
The prosecution claims it was Adams at the outset of the drama she was determined to create.
The court was told her five-year relationship with her children’s father, hotel worker James Maynard, 28, was “volatile”.
She became pregnant shortly after the relationship began when she was 17 but it was dogged by his string of affairs.
Adams, scarred from her burns, wept silently as the trial opened. She denies murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to endanger life last April.
“This is a tragic case, but the tragedy that it represents was entirely avoidable,” said Timothy Spencer QC, prosecuting.
“Fiona Adams, in the spring of last year, was in an unhappy situation. No decent human being could fail to sympathise with her predicament.
“There were many ways in which she could have dealt with things. What she chose to do was create a drama around herself and her children, and that drama culminated in her starting a fire at her own home, the result of which was the fire which took a rapid and devastating hold.
“She and her youngest child, her baby, were spared but both suffered serious injuries.”
The court heard the couple moved into their council house a month after their first child was born in 2004. Within weeks Maynard was cheating on Adams with a supermarket worker.
Mr Spencer said Adams threatened to throw herself from a bridge in 2006. Weeks later she took a cocktail of lager and pills, saying she “wanted everything to go away”. Less than a month later she took another overdose while her two young children slept. Mr Spencer said of the overdoses: “This second attempt is important. If the first was a cry for help, this time she rendered herself unconscious, leaving two young children without adult supervision in the house.
“It seems James Maynard was untouched and unmoved by this episode and his philandering continued.” Within weeks he bedded one of Adams’ best friends and the couple were living apart. Adams told a social worker she tried to kill herself because the relationship had ended and she was “struggling to come to terms with him seeing other women”.
By November 2008 Maynard told social services he was living with Adams again and she was pregnant with their third child.
The court heard that despite the reconciliation Maynard cheated on Adams on New Year’s Eve, with the supermarket worker, and had an affair after Kiernan was born in August 2009.On the night of the fire Maynard took an extra shift at work which “annoyed” Adams because the previous evening he returned at 2am, the court was told.
Witnesses said Adams’ behaviour appeared normal in the hours before the blaze and only later that evening did she appear to have had a drink.
At 10pm the noises were heard on CCTV and Adams said her barbecue had been knocked over and flowers thrown around the garden.
The trial continues.

FILICIDE: England: Shayna Bharuchi cuts out the heart of her daughter, four, as she listens to recording of Koran in ritual killing'

A mother has been arrested after a four year old girl was found stabbed to death with her heart and other organs cut out and strewn around her flat.
The 35-year-old woman was allegedly sitting in a her kitchen chanting verses of the Koran as her daughter's disembowelled corpse lay next to her.
The little girl's heart and other organs were found in different rooms around the flat in Clapton, east London.
Shayna Bharuchi, 35, was allegedly sitting in a her kitchen chanting verses of the Koran as her daughter Nusayba's disembowelled corpse lay next to her.
The woman, believed to be from Somalia, had her MP3 on full blast as she listened to the Muslim holy book.
The mother, who is understood to have two teenage children of 14 and 16, has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and is in a secure unit as police yesterday continued to guard the third-floor premises on the estate.
The gruesome scene was discovered by the girl's father, Jerome Negney, when he arrived home to the flat on Thursday to find his partner clutching a kitchen knife.
The man, believed to be a Muslim convert, dialled 999 and paramedics pronounced the girl dead at the scene.  Police said next of kin have been informed.
One elderly neighbour said last night: 'Nobody knew her very well but the children seemed very nice. However I used to be awoken by terrible screaming of a woman's voice in the middle of the night which was a regular occurence.
'Sometimes the screams would last for about 10 minutes.'

Another neighbour, who lives in the downstairs flat and asked not to be named, said: 'I was feeding my daughter her lunch at about 3pm and suddenly heard horrific screaming. It is shocking and so upsetting.'
He said the couple have lived in the flat for about a year.
A post-mortem examination will take place on Saturday at Poplar mortuary in east London.
The Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse Investigation Command is leading the murder inquiry. They are not believed to be looking for anybody else.
