FILICIDE: New Jersey: Venette Ovilde charged

NEWARK, N.J., May 24 (UPI) --
A New Jersey woman has been charged with killing an 8-year-old daughter who died of malnutrition and an untreated broken bone, prosecutors say.
Venette Ovilde also faces charges of child endangerment and aggravated manslaughter, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Her roommate, Myriam Janvier, was also charged with endangerment.
Police found the dead girl Sunday. A 7-year-old sister and 6-year-old brother were also in the apartment, alive but very thin and with untreated broken bones, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.
A neighbor, Calvin MacLean, said he occasionally saw the younger children playing in a hallway. He said Ovilde, Janvier and the children wore white all the time and he sometimes heard chanting.
Murray said investigators are trying to determine if religious beliefs played any part in the women's alleged actions.
Police were trying to trace the children's father. He and Ovilde, an immigrant from Haiti, divorced in 2005, Murray said.
